 | | ROB BENCHLEY/The Independent Before she could accept a cold beer from any of the several hundred Nantucketers, Coast Guard brass and enlisted personnel who attended her retirement/change of command ceremony last Friday afternoon, recently retired Senior Chief Lucey got a meritorious service medal from Admiral Timothy Sullivan of the USCG's First District. Friday's ceremony, a one-of-kind event that saw the retirement of one of the Coast Guard's most unique success stories, Lucey, retire, and a change of command that installed Chief Boatswain's Mate Terrill J. Malvesti in charge of Station Brant Point, brought both tears and guffaws. The afternoon featured former Station Brant Point Senior Chief Jack Downey's amusing tribute to Lucey, dozens of Coast Guard and islander speeches, awards and gifts for Lucey, not to mention a Coast Guard helicopter fly-by and hovering. Lucey starts her new life on Nantucket as the town's Deputy Harbormaster on June 4. |
