"The Reluctant

Fundamentalist"

by Mohsin Hamid

This slim novel is a riveting, unsettling story of a young Pakistani man in America who has a hard time reconciling his love for his homeland with his intoxication with America. A powerful love and sinister forces are balanced in this subtle and elegant analysis of our world today. Beautifully written.

"The Prince of Nantucket"

by Jan Goldstein

Even if I didn't live on Nantucket I'd be a sucker for a juicy story set here, and this is a good one. Goldstein packs a whirlwind of emotions into his novel, which centers on a political candidate called away from his Senate race to spend time with his dying mother--a once famous artist--now suffering from Alzheimer's on Nantucket. The various pressures he faces ring true to anyone struggling with success as the world defines it, versus the kind of success to be found within. The island provides him with the landscape to redeem himself both in the eyes of his family and to himself, through art and honesty. Challenged to find out what matters most, he unexpectedly finds that the life he had been running from offers

him exactly what he needs.

"Dreamgirls"

(Rated PG-13 for language,

some sexuality and drug content.)

Directed by Bill Condon, "Dreamgirls" is set in the early 1960s, and it follows a trio of singers called the Dreamettes. Effie (Jennifer Hudson) has always been the soulful lead of the group, but their new ruthless and ambitious manager (Jamie Fox) has plans to replace her with the more marketable Deena (Beyonce). Great performances by all including Eddie Murphy and Anika Noni Rose - but this movie belongs to Jennifer Hudson in her Oscarwinning role. You go girl!

"Little Children"

(Rated R for strong sexuality and nudity, language and some

disturbing content.)

"Little Children" takes a stark look at what happens behind closed doors in a small suburban community. As stay-athome parents, Sarah (Kate Winslet) and Brad (Patrick Wilson) each take their own children to a public pool on hot summer days. When Brad and Sarah begin an illicit affair, the eyes of the community watch them with the same fascination with which they watch Ronnie (Oscar-nominated Jackie Earle Haley), a registered sex offender who has just moved to town. With all of the characters being judged by the community, "Little Children" examines a tense world of secrets where no one really knows how to behave.
