CPS baseball starts season with victory Starter Nick Lombardi threw a one-hitter, allowing just a single in the first inning. He struck out 14 batters, including six straight batters in the second and third innings, to earn the complete game win in the six inning contest. CPS took a 2-0 lead in the opening inning as leftfielder Leandro Cuello led off the season with a single and centerfielder Andrew Benson followed with a walk. With two outs, designated hitter Hunter Slade singled up the middle to drive both of them home. CPS added single runs in the second and third innings. With two outs in the second, catcher Tim Marsh singled and then scored when rightfielder Jack Moran reached on a pitcher's error. CPS added another two-out run the following inning when third baseman Grady Murtagh singled home first baseman Mac McGrath, who had reached on a fielder's choice. The visitors opened up the game with five runs in the fourth inning. Marsh led off with a single up the middle and scored on Moran's double. Cuello followed with a single and shortstop Jake Molloy plated Moran with a hit. Lombardi contributed offensively with a two-out single that scored Cuello and Molloy. Murtagh closed out the scoring by driving in McGrath, who had earlier walked. In the fifth, Marsh led off with a walk and Cuello followed by reaching on a fielder's choice. Molloy then hit a three-run home run to left field. CPS added five runs in the sixth inning after loading the bases on a series of walks. Owen LaFarge collected two RBIs with a double. Molloy led the 13-hit attack with three hits and four RBIs. Cuello, Murtagh and Marsh each contributed two hits. I |
