SOFTBALL TEAM STARTS SEASON 4-0 Although they didn't play over the weekend, the Lady Whalers' softball team remained undefeated through last week with defeats of Cape Tech and Falmouth.

Nantucket trounced Cape Tech, 18-1, and turned back Falmouth, 5-2. Grace Anne Tornovish earned the win against Cape Tech, and Olivia Hull gave up just four hits and two walks, while striking out nine, in the complete-game victory over Falmouth.

The Lady Whalers resume play this week with games tomorrow at Blue Hills, Friday at Provincetown and Sunday at home against Falmouth.

NHS CHEERLEADERS NAMED TO NATIONAL COMPETITION Whalers cheerleaders Whitney Butler and Tiffani Montijo will travel to Fayetteville, N.C. on May 17-20 as two of 40 finalists chosen nationwide in the 2007 National Cheerleader of the Year Scholarship Competition. The two juniors were nominated based on an essay, letters of endorsement, official transcript of grades and a video. They will compete for $4,500 in scholarships.

Butler is also a member of the NHS varsity basketball and softball teams. Montijo is a member of the NHS gymnastics team.

LITTLE LEAGUE STARTS SATURDAY Opening day for Nantucket Little League baseball and softball is Saturday, May 5. Softball games begin at the Delta Fields on Sun Island Road at 10 a.m., followed by major league games at 1 p.m. and minor league games at 4 p.m.

Farm League softball and baseball will play at Tom Nevers Field, with softball beginning at 10 a.m. and baseball games scheduled for 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Tee-ball will begin the week of May 14. Parents will be notified of the schedule by team managers.
