"Crazy '08" by Cait Murphy

"Crazy '08" ($25) has an appealing subtitle: "How a cast of cranks, rogues, boneheads and magnates created the greatest year in baseball history." But "Crazy '08" is not just the exciting story of a great season. It is also about the forces that created modern baseball and the America that produced it. Cait Murphy is Finn Murphy's sister, and she wants her readers to know that she has a long-time interest in the sport and does not throw like a girl.

"The Motel Life"

by Willy Vlautin

First published in the U.K., one of my favorite books of last year is finally out in the States. It's not for everyone, but once you hear the narrator Frank Flannigan tell of being awakened in the middle of the night by his brother, Jerry Lee, who relates a story of his involvement in a terrible accident, odds are you'll be hooked. The two flee Reno, Nev. - their hometown - for a time, but this is just one more setback in young lives lived on the squalid margin. Set against their troubles are their love for one another, the memory of a good mother, their artistic impulses, and Annie James, an angel in disguise. This is one of those terrific debuts - -a lowlife story told by a naif, a sweet, sad book unlike any you've ever read.

"Ten Items or Less" (Rated R for language)

Morgan Freeman and Paz Vega star in this low-key and delightful comedy about the evolution of a friendship, even if it only lasts for a day. Morgan Freeman is "him," an actor who is not on anybody's A-list. Stranded at a site location, he bounces his ideas off a supermarket cashier, Scarlett (played by Paz Vega) for his next role as a store manager. This dialogue-driven film is not a Hollywood blockbuster, but it is a must-see. Directed by Brad Silberling.

"The Queen" (Rated PG-13 for brief, strong

language.)

The death of Princess Diana shocked the entire world, and the people of England saw the Queen's lack of a reaction as bizarre. The film follows the time immediately following Diana's death, when people didn't know what to think was happening with the royal family. Helen Mirren stars in her Oscar-winning performance as Elizabeth II.
