for the ARTS record
Attention: High School kids with artistic talent Money and prestige could be yours! Rep. Bill Delahunt has announced an art competition for students in Massachusetts' Tenth District. (The fightin' tenth.) Delahunt and the South Shore Art Center are inviting high school artists from the South Shore, Cape and Islands to submit artwork in six categories: painting, drawing, print and mixed media, computer graphics and photography. All works must be two-dimensional, unframed, matted or mounted on black or white, and no larger than 30 by 30 inches to outside trim. The winning piece, which will be announced in late May, will go on display in the nation's capital, and the winner will receive a four-year, renewable scholarship to the Savannah School of Design in Savannah, Ga. (valued at $20,000). The deadline for entry forms and artwork to reach Congressman Delahunt's office is April 26.

The contest advises that each school may submit up to 15 entries. However, according to Deputy District Director Kim Arouca, students may submit their work independently of their schools. Home schooled students are also welcome to submit. The limit exists because we have limited space in what we can exhibit," Arouca said. "But if a student comes to us on their own, we wouldn't turn them away."
For more information about the contest timetable or guidelines, contact Kim Arouca in Rep. Delahunt's office (800-794-9911). You can also read more and download entry forms through the congressman's Website:

Food for Thought: Reggie Levine When I decided last summer that I wanted to write a multi-part series on the history of the "Arts" on Nantucket, I found myself sitting in the garden outside Reggie Levine's house every week, running my tape recorder as he rattled off history in anecdotes. Having summered here as a child in the early 20th century, Levine has had his hand in one arts organization or another for decades. (Currently, he's the president of the Nantucket Arts Council.) You can recreate the Reggie Levine garden chat experience by attending his "Food for Thought" lunchtime presentation. Make sure he tells you a few stories about the Bushongs.

What are you doing with the kids during Spring Break? The Nantucket Historical Association has again been offering free, historically based arts classes at the 1800 house this week. Thanks to a grant from the Nantucket Golf Club Foundation, the classes not only keep kids ages 8 to 12 entertained from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., they also teach little Nantucketers about island history through its arts and crafts. Interested parents should pre-register their kids by contacting Julie Kever at 228- 1894. The rest of the week's classes are as follows:
+ Wednesday, April 18 - Creative Drawing. Renowned Nantucket artist and carver Nancy Chase teaches this special class in drawing Nantucket scenes with charcoal and colored pencils.
+ Thursday, April 19 - Paint and Decorate a Birdhouse. Local artists will teach students how to paint and decorate their own wooden birdhouse.
+ Friday, April 20 - Decoupage a Shaker- style box. Mary Lacoursiere and Betsey Braun will teach students how to decoupage a Shaker-style box. Materials will be supplied, but feel free to bring some of your favorite small photos or papers for inclusion in your design.
