"Talk to the Snail: Ten
Commandments for Understanding the French"
by Stephen Clarke Englishman Stephen Clarke (author of "A Year in the Merde") has written a humorous, informative guide on aspects of Gallic behavior (e.g. "The 4th Commandment: Tu Seras Malade/Thou Shalt Be Ill"). He gives entertaining examples and anecdotes, and isn't hesitant to say where he thinks the French have got it right and where they've missed the boat - where they're charming and where they're exasperating. The controversial views of Americans and English on the French have generated a lot of books. This one, mostly a warts-and-all affectionate look (at $15), is fun and interesting and explains a lot.
