Maia Farish to a two-year term on the New Jersey Historic Trust.
Though she's a selfdescribed native New Yorker, Farish has had a lifelong connection to Nantucket. As a young adult, she had a mentor in the late Walter Beinecke.
"Beinecke was certainly one of the pioneers of the historic preservation movement in America," says Farish. "He set the gold standard on Nantucket by which the revitalization of historic communities elsewhere in the country would be measured. He saw promise in Nantucket. He built a marina there, but he kept the old fishing shacks for artists' studios and galleries. Beinecke 'got it.'"
Farish worked with Beinecke at the Nantucket Historical Trust, a private foundation, and with Preservation Institute: Nantucket, a historic preservation summer residency program of the University of Florida School of Architecture.
After a stint as director of public relations for the Nantucket Historical Association, she served as executive director of the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce, a position that allowed her to leverage the town's historic preservation efforts as a means to improve business, services, cultural offerings, and community planning.
Farish brought those same skills to her position as executive director of the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach, a nonprofit membership organization that supported preservation advocacy, public programs, community relations, and education curricula for young people and adults, among other enterprises.
Farish is concentrating on the effort to restore Hollybush Mansion, Rowan University's 19th-century, Italian-style villa that was the site of the historic Glassboro Summit between President Lyndon B. Johnson and Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin in 1967. The University is planning an event on June 23 to kick off a year-long commemoration of the event's 40th anniversary.
Farish is the mother of NHS graduate Michael Gaillard, and the daughter of Elizabeth Oldham.
