QUESTIONS WRITER'S LOGIC Oh Grant! As Ronald Reagan said, "There you go again, Mr. Sanders." There could be a case for appointing members to some boards and committees, and we already do, but I must question your logic when you assert that …"only a fraction of the island (sic) actually votes. So the Planning Board, H.D.C., and SHAB are about as representative of the will of the people as Honey Bunches of Oats… ." You therefore opine that it is far better that members be appointed by the Board of Selectmen. Last I knew the Board of Selectmen are elected by the same fraction of the island voters. How then do we assume that voters only elect people with special interest for the aforementioned boards and committees, but elect only people with impeccable wisdom and ethics to serve as Selectmen? If you could get your dog elected to the H.D.C. for $14,000, couldn't any individuals or civic organization likewise get their favorites elected to the Board of Selectmen? Get real Grant. The same voters who elect people with wisdom and ethics certainly can elect board members who are equally bright and clean. - D. Neil Parent |
