Island saddened by passing of John Shugrue

The unexpected death on Sunday of respected island surveyor John Shugrue has shocked members of the community who saw him recently appearing to be in good spirits and sound health after a successful battle with cancer. Mr. Shugrue, 65, died at home of an apparent heart attack.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. this Sunday, March 11, at St. Mary's Cemetery with a reception to follow at Faregrounds Restaurant.

"I've been doing business with him for 33 years," said attorney Richard Glidden. "He had a unique style. He had dogs running around his office and papers everywhere, but he knew where everything was. He was the only engineer here for

while and he did all the subdivision work in Surfside in the 1980s. For years and years, he was the man - he was the expert.

"He and I had a very good relationship," Glidden added. "He was very helpful to me. He was a wealth of information. There aren't many properties he didn't know something about or have

file about. He had literally thousands of clients."
