Nantucket Junior Miss Kerry Fee
Mass. Junior Miss results In November, Nantucket High School senior Kerry Fee wowed the crowd with an electrical guitar solo to win the 2007 Nantucket Junior Miss scholarship competition. Last weekend, Fee traveled to Franklin, Mass. to participate in the state's Junior Miss competition. Fee was one of 10 candidates competing for the title of Massachusetts Junior Miss. She won the Spirit of Junior Miss Award and a Talent Award, for combined winnings of $400.

"It was such a surprise. All the girls could have gotten it. They were amazing girls, and we got along great," Fee said of winning the Spirit award. "The week was kind of hard, because all of the girls were dancing and I've never taken a dance class in my life. But I'm happy I did it."

"She won the Spirit of Junior Miss award, and that's a wonderful compliment, because that's voted on by the girls themselves, deciding who best exudes the qualities of Junior Miss," said Kristen Holdgate, Local Chairman and President of Nantucket Junior Miss. "To win the talent award was icing on the cake. And for the talent, she did the same song, 'Sweet Home Chicago,' and she rocked the house with it."

Food for Thought: "Medicine

on Board the Whalers" They came up with some good ideas, those old sailors. Recently, I discovered that my personal drink of choice, the Gimlet (gin, or in my case, vodka + Rose's Lime Juice), was the brainchild of British sailors trying to ward off scurvy. While I don't know if that's the kind of "medicine" practiced aboard whalers, it does give one pause, wondering what other kinds of cleverness the whalers employed to save both life and limb at sea.
