What is the measure of a man? Beloved friends are the truest measure. Richard's loving, funny and genteel ways will remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
A pure gentleman, Richard had an uncompromising generosity of spirit toward his friends, family and community. Many will remember his quick wit and his immediate response to a friend in need.
Richard spent much of his life in the Boston area with his loving family. He was well respected as the manager of both Sandrine's (a fine French restaurant) and The Parker House Hotel.
At the urging of a friend, Richard moved to Nantucket full time in 1999. Many in the arts community knew him for his years working as Associate Director at Sailor's Valentine Gallery and most recently as the manager of European Traditions. He also worked at Fifty-Six Union restaurant.
Richard was an accomplished and educated artist. He was a fine draftsman, painter, photographer, wood carver, and a constant gardener.
An avid reader of ancient history and civilization, he was keenly knowledgeable and could converse easily on many topics. He was a collector of old books and antiques and loved his travels throughout Europe with his friends. He had recently returned from three weeks in Ireland, France and Rome.
Richard was fortunate to have lived in only two houses during his time on Nantucket, both abutting Dead Horse Valley and Mill Hill Park. He was passionate about the care and preservation of the valley and enjoyed walking his dog and photographing the beauty of the valley in all its seasons.
Richard is predeceased by his father Richard Francis Walsh. He is survived by his mother, Rosaleen Walsh, his sister Rosemary Vecchione, his nieces Charity Cimmino and Christy Tobin, his nephew Daniel Richard Vecchione, his two greatnephews Kyle Tobin and William Cimmino III, and his dog Sophie Tucker and cat Bliss.
A memorial service will be held in the spring. A thousand daffodils have been planted and a bench will be installed in Dead Horse Valley in his memory.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Richard's name to the MSPCA wildlife program, or the MSPCA adoption program and/ or emergency
care fund. I
