NHA Brown Bag Lunch - Jean Grimmer On Washington's Birthday, Egan Foundation Executive Director Jean Grimmer will honor the legacy of one of Nantucket's more recent and departed statesmen - Albert F. Egan Jr, a.k.a Bud Egan - and also the legacy of his wife, Dorothy Harrison Egan. "From what I've been able to research, theirs might be one of the largest legacies every left on Nantucket," said Grimmer of the Egan's establishment of the Egan Foundation. Originally the owner of the Marine Home Center, Bud Egan and his wife bestowed upon the island a three-pronged gift with the Egan Foundation, which owns and operates the Coffin School, Mill Hill Press and the Lifesaving Museum. Grimmer hopes to give those in attendance a better understanding of these three components.

1800 House craft classes for kids Some of the island's best artisans teach the 1800 House classes. For the second year in a row, The Nantucket Historical Association is making these classes free and available to students (ages 8-12) for the week of the winter break. "Turnout was very good last year. We were maxed out all week with the classes," said Sarah Bishop, interpretation coordinator for the NHA. This year, notable folk artist Charles Munro teaches students "Primitive Folk Art Painting" on Monday; NHA staff leads "Create a Hanging Mobile" on Tuesday; well-respected ivory carver and artist Nancy Carter directs "Creative Drawing" on Wednesday; artist and decorator Mary Lacoursiere teaches "Make Your Own Floor Mat" on Thursday; and 1800 House director Betsey Braun helps kids "Make a Sailor's Valentine" on Friday. Courtesy of a Nantucket Golf Club grant, the classes and materials are free (registration is required). "The classes go very quickly, and at the end of the day, kids can take home a beautiful piece of artwork they can put in their room, give to a friend or parent or whomever," Bishop said. "It's a nice memento from the vacation week."
