I ON SELECTMEN

CatherineStover
AT ITS MEETING WEDNESDAY, FEB. 14, THE BOARD OF

SELECTMEN, FIRST CONVENING AS THE BOARD OF HEALTH:

(Bennett absent)

+ Unanimously approved Health Inspector Richard Ray's request to discuss the issue of failed septic systems in harbor watershed districts and how to address the matter with the Department of Environmental Protection. Relating to a "tight tank" proposal for some of those areas, which eliminates the leach portion of the systems and would call for regular pump-outs, Ray said he has a meeting with DEP on Feb. 27 and asked that Department of Public Works director Jeff Willett and selectmen representatives also attend that session. According to Ray, there are about 20 tight tanks needed near the harbor in Madaket and roughly eight near Nantucket Harbor, most of which are not yearround properties that use an excessive amount of water. The town would schedule pump-outs so property owners do not need to be concerned with that element.

+ Heard a commendation from Marine and Coastal Resources Department superintendent Dave Fronzuto recognizing Deputy Marine Officer Dougan for his role in a water rescue in Nantucket Harbor on Jan. 15.

DougBennett
+ Learned from Town Clerk Catherine Stover that on Monday, Feb. 12 former administrative clerk Linda MacDonald was sworn in as Assistant Town Clerk to replace James Grieder who is now with the Historic District Commission. MacDonald's position was posted with yesterday afternoon being the application deadline.

+ Accepted the resignation of Emily Avery from the Finance Committee because of a health issue with intention to send her a letter thanking her for her service. Her term would have ended this June.

+ Heard a town administrator's report on the status of the FY08 general fund budget which had a few changes, most notably a $1 million reduction on health insurance costs because some employees have agreed to change plans and claims have been less than anticipated.

+ Heard an updated overview on functions of the Marine Department.

+ Rescheduled a presentation on the new public safety facility's space needs feasibility study until March 14 because weather prevented the consultant from traveling to the island.

WhiteyWillauer
+ Rescheduled a Master Plan update from Planning Director Andrew Vorce until March 14.

+ Voted unanimously to send a letter to the Minerals Management Service regarding the proposed Cape Wind turbine farm in Nantucket Sound. Selectman Michael Kopko explained that the letter will indicate the town's appreciation for having been included in the progress of the regulatory process for the project and its desire to continue to be so included. Kopko said it is too early in the process for the board to take a stand for or against the turbine farm or on its potential site.
