I ON SELECTMEN
AT ITS MEETINGWEDNESDAY, FEB. 7, THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN:
+ Heard an announcement from Police Chief William Pittman that the state notified him to say Nantucket's emergency management plan is one of the most complete in the Commonwealth. He added that local volunteer "ham" radio operators participated in a program last week to help solve issues which may arise in times of crisis.

CatherineStover
+ Unanimously approved a request from Town Clerk Catherine Stover (who recused herself as a selectman for this vote) to reappoint Janet Coffin as the Registrar of Voters.

+ Unanimously approved a citizen request for acceptance of a sewer easement amendment on premises at Dolphin Court.

+ Voted 3 - 2 (Chadwick and Kopko opposed) to override a Traffic Safety Workgroup proposal not to make changes to the downtown traffic flow until a study and recommendations are completed. Instead, within the upcoming two months, Broad Street will become one way from the Jared Coffin House corner to Federal Street, Centre Street will be all one way from Main to Broad Street and Chestnut Street will become one way from Federal to Centre Street. The issue that caused the majority of the board to make this vote was emergency response problems experienced in the past because of the current street traffic flow, rather than a focus on downtown traffic congestion. The plan will not eliminate parking spaces, but will prevent drivers from going up Chestnut Street and turning left to leave town via Hussey Street.

DougBennett
+ Heard a departmental overview on the town's Information Systems.

+ Voted 4 - 1 (Bennett opposed) to send a letter supporting a rooms tax legislation change that would extend the tax to private homes, condos and timeshare units rented for 90 days or less. The extension is meant to provide towns with added revenue from the fee already received from room rentals.

+ Dissolved the Sewer Advisory Committee.

+ Heard a presentation on the "Kyoto Protocol" pertaining to the issue of global warming and unanimously approved selectman Doug Bennett's suggestion that the board should discuss the matter with the Nantucket Planning and Economic Development Commission and invite outside advisors to discuss the issue with town officials.
