Grand on Goldfinch
Naushop is a relatively new neighborhood on the island. Most of the homes here were built in the past 12 years and only a few lots remain. Yet this picture-perfect village is designed to recreate the sensibilities of Nantucket's Old Historic District with its small setbacks, brick sidewalks, white picket fences, brick driveways, granite curbing and other standard features that give the neighborhood a look and feel of Nantucket of old. Unlike the Old Historic District, however, Naushop offers many modern services, less traffic, more parking and several "little extras" like a large, common function room and tennis courts. The neighborhood is convenient to town, the airport and the mid-island shopping district.
Amid the wonderful homes in the Naushop neighborhood, one home stands out. Forty Goldfinch Drive is one of the largest houses in the area (and is offered fully furnished). While it fits in with the architectural standards of the development, it is distinctive in terms of use of space, amenities, materials and craftsmanship.
Step inside the front doorway and you find yourself in a wide foyer with a powder room to the left, and, to the right, a room which could serve as a guest room, a home office or a playroom. The flooring on the first floor and stairway is a wonderful figured cypress wood, which wears like iron and reflects warmth and character throughout the home.
From here, the floor plan opens up to reveal a living room with an inviting fireplace and a large, cozy seating area. This space enjoys extremely high ceilings and plenty of light. A tropicalthemed ceiling fan keeps the space warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Beyond the living room is a sizeable dining area and an open kitchen floor plan with room for an extended family and friends. Asingle French door leads to a large, rounded brick patio in the rear, as well as access to the freestanding single-car garage which offers more storage than most families need.
The kitchen features a three-seat breakfast bar island with a built-in prep sink. There is also a small but conveniently located desk area next to the back doorway. All of the countertops here are a marvelous, polished, black- flecked granite which sits atop clean, white raisedpanel cabinets and adds a sense of weight and sturdiness to the space. The appliances are all top quality. The plumbing fixtures are well-made and handsome.
The next stop on the tour is the finished basement with its comfortable, two-tiered home theater area and game room to the left, plus a bedroom and full bath to the right. The bedroom is accessible via a hidden outside stairway, making this an ideal guest room.
Next, we travel to the second floor. At the top of the stairs one finds an excellent view of the living room and dining room below over a railway of red maple and white painted balusters. To the right is a large, sunny bedroom with ample storage. To the left, the master suite features a walk-in closet as well as a bathroom with an expertly tiled vanity area and a massive, walk-in, glass-front shower.
A third flight of stairs leads to the crow's nest: a sunny single bedroom with its own bath. One would be hard pressed to find a home with so much living space and so many options as this.
Forty Goldfinch Drive is a five-bedroom, four and one-half bath home in one of the island's most picturesque and desirable neighborhoods and is offered for $1,695,000. The abutting landscaped lot is
available for purchase if desired. I
