"Travels in the Scriptorium:

A Novel" by Paul Auster

Author of the screenplay for "Smoke" and "Blue in the Face," Auster is known for his metaphysical investigations of life, and "Travels in the Scriptorium" is vintage Auster. The book illuminates one day in the life of Mr. Blank - a day shadowed by mystery, secrets, uncertain identities and a faceless tormentor. I love everything that Auster writes. His stories are always unusual and leave you with a haunted feeling.

"Zoli" by Colum McCann's

This lyrical new novel tells the story of a Slovak Romany (gypsy) girl of great imagination whose grandfather teaches her to read and write and sends her to school - all in defiance of Romany tradition, which mistrusts written culture. Enduring the resultant scorn of her own people, as well as the constant persecution they suffer, Zoli becomes an honored singer and poet among them before becoming famous.

Covering the period from the 1930s, when pro-Nazi, Slovak Hlinka guards treated the Roma mercilessly, through the years of Communist rule (when Zoli is promoted as an example of the new proletariat) and all the way past the fall of the Berlin Wall, "Zoli" richly details the world of a beset people - whose hardship is punctuated by laughter and celebration - and brings to life a humble girl becoming an artist.
