AWINNING FOREHAND
Dennie Doran makes a return at the net during the "Bonnie Bell Battle of the Babes" tournament finals on Sunday.

Doran and her paddle tennis partner Darcie Evans (right) went on to win their finals of the Consolation Round against their friendly rivals from Duxbury, Mass. The annual tournament, held at the platform tennis courts off the

Polpis road, is nearing its 20th year. The Duxbury team (24 of them came to the island Friday) engaged an equal

number of Nantucket ladies for nearly 16 hours of play. Margaretta Andrews and Jeannie Critchley won the final match over Craig Hunter and Jessie Glidden in a three-set "nail-biter." This year's Nantucket/Duxbury event was

named after Bonnie Bell, who died suddenly last April; she had been an avid player and organizer with the

Nantucket Platform Tennis Association since its inception.
