Health Inspector Richard Ray said people still need to check pets and themselves for ticks because there are more than usual due to the season's warm weather. He also warned that mosquitos may be out earlier than expected this spring and recommends getting rid of any yard containers holding water that could draw the insects. He further reported that while no flu cases have yet been substantiated on the island there is a bad chest cold circulating that is difficult to overcome. Ray additionally said a zero tolerance policy is in effect for landlords who allow tenant trash to build up or be outside, unprotected by containers. Transgressions will result in $100 fines if situations are not corrected. Ray anticipates it will take more than a year to implement proposed rental regulations requiring property owners who lease to be licensed and inspected, but hopes citizens will attend upcoming informational meetings on the proposal in March and April.
