I ON THE COURT Nantucket Court Report
An island teenager and one of a group of youths who broke into Miacomet Avenue homes on Dec. 12 and 13 and took possessions and vehicles during the spree was sentenced on Monday to serve two years in the Barnstable House of Correction. Adam Jenkins, 17, who has been incarcerated for 47 days since the episode, admitted in District Court to seven counts of breaking and entering in the daytime to commit a felony, four counts of vandalizing property, two counts of motor vehicle larceny, two counts of unauthorized use of a vehicle, two counts of larceny over $250 and two counts of larceny under $250.

"Do you have an appreciation for what it means to have someone break into your house and take things and destroy it?" asked Judge W. James O'Neill after questioning Jenkins as to his motive and receiving a mumbled response that he had been drinking and using drugs.

The judge sentenced Jenkins to two years in jail on each breaking and entering count but ordered that the sentences run concurrently. He was found guilty on all the other charges, which were filed. Jenkins was also found guilty for violating his previous probation on charges of receiving stolen property and use of a vehicle without authority. Jenkins will live in a special unit of the facility that houses the Shock program, a voluntary, military based program emphasizing counseling, discipline, social skills and anger management. He will also be educated to prepare for the GED.
