"Paula Spencer"
by Roddy Doyle
I just finished Roddy Doyle's latest novel, "Paula Spencer," in which the reader meets (again) the protagonist of Doyle's 1996 novel, "The Woman who Walked into Walls." This latest novel follows a slice of a few months in the life of the previously battered recovering alcoholic and her family and friends. Doyle wrote so appropriately in a nervous staccato style that perfectly reflects the character.

"Absurdistan"
by Gary Shteyngart
The author of the "Russian Debutante's Handbook" has done it again. This book is the story of Misha, the son of St. Petersburg's 1,238th richest man. Misha is a 325-lb. lamenter who was educated in the States but cannot receive a visa to return because of his father's murder of an Oklahoma businessman. Terribly missing all things American, like rap music and his Bronx Latina girlfriend, Misha will go to any means to get back into the States. The light at the end of his tunnel may lie in Absurdistan, a tiny nation where Misha is able to buy a European passport and begin his journey back to America. Full of wit and loveable characters (think "A Confederacy of Dunces" on the Neva), this book will keep you laughing through this gray and foggy Nantucket winter.

Atough movie about drugs and prostitution starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, who did an amazing job as a single mother who returns to the world from a three-year prison sentence. In addition to the problems she has finding work, she finds that her brother has taken in the daughter she left when she went to prison, and his wife, who has grown attached to the little girl, fights relinquishing her maternal role.

"This Film is Not Yet Rated" Rating surrendered; previous
version rated NC-17 for some
graphic sexual content.
Director Kirby Dick hires private investigators to uncover the heretofore-secret identities of the members of the film ratings board, which has been the bane of many controversial movies. The film includes cameos from directors like Kevin Smith and John Waters - anyone who has ever been screwed over by the ratings board.

We make the pick For those of you seeking new ideas for your Valentine's Day presents, the Canadian musicians behind
Tailoredmusic.com will allow you to personalize the lyrics of their pre-written love songs (in several genres) for your special "Baby, Baby." Here are sample lyrics from the Soft Rock (female voice) song: "We're here in [insert name of place]/ We're making all of our dreams come true/ I'm thankful, and I'm so glad/ I'm so glad that I'm with you, [insert name of significant other]." The songs - which range from the unfortunately bad to the somewhat decent - take about two weeks to get back to you.
