CPS boys, girls victorious over Mattacheese
BY STEVE SHEPPARD
The Cyrus Peirce School girls pulled out a last minute victory, while the boys' steady press helped them build an insurmountable fourth-quarter lead, as both middle school squads defeated their Mattacheese counterparts Monday afternoon.
Down by three points, 18-15, with 1:49 remaining in the game, Nantucket scored 6 unanswered points to win a nail-biter, 21-18.
Alexis Clinger's field goal narrowed the margin to 1. Jessica Halford then put one in from underneath the basket with 59 seconds to go. Nantucket's strong defense, meanwhile, hounded Mattacheese until a field goal at the buzzer by Kaitlyn Clinger (Alexis's twin sister) put the icing on the cake.
"It was a great game," said coach Christina
Boling afterward. "Dacia Beans and Morgan
Tornovish played incredible defense, and the team played great defensively as a whole."
Leading the scoring was Halford with 8 points, followed by Alexis Clinger with 5, Beans with 4, Kaitlyn Clinger 2, and Kelly Reid 2.
BOYS WIN 50-37
Although Nantucket had a 6 point lead at the half, Mattacheese came back in the third quarter, scored 7 unanswered points to start the period, and was only down by 1, 28-27, at the end of the stanza.

From there, however, Nantucket outscored the visitors, 22-10, for the final tally.
The scoring breakdown: Larry Bo Woolfolk, 22; Carlton Hue, 20; Matt Bulmer, Kadeem McCarthy and Michael Molta, 4 each.
In last Friday's contest at Provincetown, the boys jumped out to an early 22-5 lead and won by a final score of 56-34. "We were able to play 14 players in the first period, and all 18 traveling players saw action," said head coach Jeremiah Splaine.
High scorers against P-town were: Woolfolk with 15, Hue with 12 and McCarthy with 7. Steven Reis provided a highlight by hitting a 3-point shot in the third quarter.
Splaine credited both victories on his team's "pressure defense and fast break points."
With Monday's wins, the boys are now 3-0 on the year, and the girls are 2-1.
Both teams are scheduled to play at Nauset Friday afternoon.
