PROPERTY PROFILE
Island Properties $6,995,000
You know the house. If you've driven the Polpis Road a few times, you've seen the bright white old dory up on its wooden frame, mast slightly off-kilter, standing out against a veritable sea of green lawn just beyond a simple split rail fence. Like many, you've wondered about this property. It intrigues you. What's it like inside? What lies beyond the main house? What would it be like to spend some time here, set back from sweeping West Polpis Harbor?

Allow us to take you on a tour.

As you drive up the white shell driveway, past the iconic white dory, the first thing you notice is the mature stand of hemlocks which provide shade and shelter. They also serve to make this home seem slightly less imposing (although no less impressive - not even a sequoia planted here could accomplish that).

To your right is the guest cottage which features a garage and a large living area with high ceilings and ample storage on the first floor. There's also a full-sized, finished basement room, accessible by a winding spiral stairway and ideal as a home theater or media room. The second floor is a cozy, sun-drenched studio with a kitchenette and a full bath.

WONDERFUL WEST POLPIS HARBOR
Onto the main house, we step up to the wrap-around deck and the "back door." (Like many homes on the water, the front door is actually the back door because such homes actually face the harbor, and not the road.) Just steps inside the French doors to the left, we find ourselves in the kitchen which features top-quality appliances, cherry and solid-surface counters, a dual-basin sink, a breakfast bar and a wonderful wide-pine floor. To the right, is the dining room with a compass rose painted on the floor beneath the dining room table and another pair of French doors leading to the back deck. (It seems as though every room in the house has a pair of French doors leading to the deck, but this is not so. About a third of the rooms do, however.)

The dining room spills into the living room which is one of the most impressive spaces we've seen, with its sky-high ceilings, exposed beams, large, inviting hearth and amazing light. At first glance, this appears to be an old home that someone has meticulously restored, but on further inspection it becomes apparent that this is a modern structure that has taken advantage of several reclaimed building materials like the rough-hewn, notched beams and wide pine flooring, to give the impression of age.

The designer of this home, Gwynne Thorsen, clearly understands Nantucket style and its connection to history.

Beyond this grand living room is another, more intimate gathering space with another fireplace, chamfered ceilings and white painted wood paneling. At the far end of the first floor is a guest bedroom with its own full bath. This room leads to the covered part of the deck, which provides shade and shelter - an ideal spot to enjoy a summer supper or take refuge from a sudden rain shower.

The second floor, which is accessible via a curved, open stairway, features an amazing view of the harbor through oversized arched windows. There are four bedrooms and three baths here, including a master suite with a walk-in closet, a full bath, a hidden laundry area, several built-in cabinets and shelves and a stunning view of the harbor.

The property itself extends northward toward the harbor and fans out to provide the guarantee of an unobstructed harbor view forever. There's a lovely grassy walk through a stand of junipers to the harbor's edge where one can launch a small boat or kayak. This is one of only thirteen properties which enjoy frontage on West Polpis Harbor, so you can be assured of your privacy and solitude.

This amazing property with a total of six bedrooms and five and one-half baths, water access and take-your-breath-away views is

offered at $6,995,000. I
