MR. GLIDDEN TURNS 90
He may have turned 90 on Jan. 18, but James Glidden remains the epitome of a dapper gentleman, seen around town almost daily as he continues a tradition of walks from his Centre Street law office to get the mail and do his firm's banking business.

Asked his secret to a long life he said, "Stay out of trouble."

A Nantucket native, Glidden opened Glidden and Glidden P.C. in 1946 and has played many important roles in the community. He was a member of the Board of Selectmen from the 1940s into the 1950s, and from the '50s into the 1960s he had oversight of Our Island Home - hiring staff, overseeing the budget and assisting with resident admissions. He has served on the boards of both local banks, been involved with Ducks Unlimited, helped author the HDC Act for Nantucket, and with the late Bernie Grossman, was instrumental in bringing cable television to the island in the late 1960s. "I didn't do anything but play the game," he modestly said of his achievements.
