AT ITS JAN. 17 MEETING, THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN: (Stover absent)
+ Heard an announcement about the Atheneum's "One book, one Island" program running from Jan. 22 through March 30 to promote reading, but also offering films, lectures and presentations.

+ Unanimously approved a Verizon request to relocate a joint pole on Hooper Farm Road.
+ Voted 3 - 1 (Bennett opposed) to amend the town regulations for uses around town-owned beaches adjacent to town-owned land to prohibit commercial rentals of kayaks and similar vessels. The prohibition does not deny access to pond use and excludes family gatherings.
+ Held a public hearing for citizen comments on the final draft of the Nantucket and Madaket Harbors Plan and voted unanimously to extend the public comment period for a board decision on Feb. 21.
+ Unanimously approved implementation of a National Incident Management System for the island. Police Chief William Pittman explained that the system involves responses to all emergencies and will allow Nantucket's response protocol to mirror other towns in the state.
+ Unanimously voted to hire an independent consultant for the proposed 'Sconset Beach Erosion Control/Nourishment Project, whose costs will be paid by the 'Sconset Beach Preservation Fund.

AT ITS MEETING TONIGHT, JAN. 24, MEMBERS CONVENING
AS THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, WILL:
+ Request approval to implement the National Incident Management System as approved by the selectmen on Jan. 17.
+ Hear a request from the Council for Human Services for approval of a grant application to the National Association of Counties Technical Assistance to evaluate the local healthcare system and generate county-specific data on the importance of the local healthcare system to the island's economy.
+ Review the FY08 county budget totaling $788,917.
CONVENING AS THE BOARD OF HEALTH, MEMBERS WILL: + Hear of a variance request for 16 Western Avenue in Surfside.
+ Hear brief updates on harbor watershed protection districts inspections; tick borne diseases; and human habitation issues.
THE NANTUCKET REGIONAL TRANSIT ADVISORY BOARD WILL: + Provide its FY06 annual report. + Seek approval to submit a federal rural funding application. + Seek approval of a bus stop extension on Washington Street. + Seek approval of the shuttle's level of service for 2007. + Seek approval of an FY07 budget amendment and the FY08 budget. + Make an appointment to its consumer advisory committee.
