Girls take home court advantage
Roll over Cape Cod Academy, Norfolk Aggie
BY STEVE SHEPPARD
The challenge, as coach Chris Ferreira sees it, is for his team to stay focused and work on improvements, even with a 6-1 record, and even though the last two games were won by margins of 39 and 34 points.

"Unfortunately, the teams haven't been more competitive," he said after the two weekend victories over Cape Cod Academy and Norfolk Agricultural High School. Some of that is due to unavoidable occurrences, like graduation - "The Aggies lost seven seniors this year," he noted - but a lot of it is that this team is simply that good.

"I don't think I've ever had the depth that we have on this team," he said.

That depth came into play last Thursday as all

players scored in the 55-16 thrashing of Cape Cod

Academy. Angela Paterson led the Whalers with 15 points, with Johnica Farmer and Callie Moore contributing 7.

It was more of the same Saturday against Norfolk Agricultural, as Paterson again scored 15 (with two 3-pointers) and nine other teammates also scored in the 52-18 rout.

It took over three minutes for Nantucket to get uncorked, but by halftime the score was 29-7, and when Paterson hit her first three at the start of the second half the outcome was assured.

Whether it's the varsity or junior varsity, the lady Whalers play an aggressive, uptempo game. In Saturday's JV action (left), Ashley Clinger splits the defense. In the varsity nightcap, Erin Lindsay (10) and Callie Moore (12) look for the hoop.
Norfolk played tough, however, and the nine jump balls in the contest are indicative of the game's scrappiness. Tenaciousness, however, is at the heart of the Whalers' style of play.

It was what Ferreira was hoping to see Sunday against West Bridgewater, but that game was rescheduled to its original Jan. 24 date. "I was really looking forward to playing," Ferreira noted.

In the meantime, there are two more home games - one tomorrow against Sturgis Charter School, the other Saturday against Provincetown - before the anticipated West Bridgewater matchup, also at home, when the girls will look to avenge the season's lone loss.

"Hopefully, we'll get better over the next two games so we'll be ready for West Bridgewater next

week," Ferreira said. I
