I
ON SELECTMEN
AT ITS MEETING ON JAN. 10, THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN:

+ Voted 3 - 1 (Bennett opposed) to install two additional stop signs at the intersection of Surfside and Fairgrounds roads to create a four-way stop as recommended by the Traffic Safety Workgroup. Though Selectman Doug Bennett asked to first hold a public hearing to hear what neighbors of the area felt about the action, Town Administrator Libby Gibson suggested monitoring the new stop arrangement for a month or so to see if it is working to cut down safety issues registered by area residents, and remove the signs if they do not make a difference.

+ Heard a departmental overview on the Department of Public Works. DPW Director Jeff Willett said one of the major problems is lack of adequate funding to maintain and repair island roads.

+ Voted 3 - 1 (Kopko opposed) to extend the loading zone at the corner of Centre and India streets.

+ Voted unanimously to turn over the Auto Limits Study Committee recommendation for a $25 per year vehicle sticker program to Transportation Planner Mike Burns. Selectman Michael Kopko wants Burns to examine how a more comprehensive approach to the island's downtown parking problem can be achieved in the future. The fee, which is proposed for all vehicles on or coming to the island, would be used to collect data on the actual number of vehicles on local roads, cover the capital and operating costs of the program, possibly help fund design or construction of sidewalks and bikepaths, and possibly help fund expanded shuttle bus services.

+ Reviewed a draft of 2007 Town Meeting articles.

+ Unanimously approved a Committee Experience form composed by Selectman Kopko for use by board representatives.

+ Unanimously voted to extend the date of dissolution of the Sewer Advisory Committee so the group can finalize unfinished details. The topic will appear again on the board's agenda the first week of February.

AT ITS MEETING TONIGHT, JAN. 17, MEMBERS WILL:

+ Hold a public hearing on a Verizon request to allow installation of a joint pole relocation on Hooper Farm Road.

+ Hold a public hearing to consider amending regulations pertaining to use of town owned beaches with regard to town-owned land adjacent to ponds and pond areas.

+ Hear a town administrator's request to approve a proclamation of implementation of a National Incident Management System. The state's governor has determined that, in order for cities and towns in the Commonwealth to be eligible for federal preparedness grants, each municipality must work to implement the system as the template for incident management. The NIMS contains standardized terminology, unified command structures, uniform guidelines for planning and training, comprehensive resource management and designated incident facilities during emergencies or disasters.

+ Take action on a proposal to have a technical consultant review the 'Sconset Beach Erosion Control/Nourishment Project and the permit applications and reports associated with the work.

+ Review drafts of 2007 Town Meeting articles.

At 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18 the selectmen will meet in the Land Bank conference room for an open workshop on Town Meeting articles, then adjourn to executive session to discuss litigation matters.
