January Improve your art in one day with AAN
The Saturday workshops are only part of a growing winter curriculum. "We've always had winter classes since we built the new building, but we have more than ever this year because we have more teachers who started and are staying with us," Legge said. "We also have the computer lab and the ceramics studio. So we feel we have a lot of variety to offer - including a range of elementary, middle and high school classes." Legge said that, despite the Saturday classes' short length, they will still allow students to "get a full experience." Alison Cooley begins the semester with a non-representational watercolor workshop this Saturday. John Lochtefeld is sharing his woodcut printing skills in a free seminar, and Donald Sutherland heads a Website design class. David Lazarus is focusing on printmaking and painting. The printmaking workshop will give a quick introduction to an intaglio printmaking technique called drypoint (which is like scrimshaw, in that you scratch the image into a plate) and to a relief printmaking technique called linocut (for which you cut away from a plate and what remains in relief is what prints). Lazarus's painting workshop will stress his particular style of art - "quick and with a large brush," he summarized. Winner of the 2006 C. Robert Perrin Watercolor Award and recent favorite with AAN patrons, Ed Rudd is conducting a new watercolor class as well. Having taught for 15 years in universities and studios all over New Zealand, where he lived for 11 years, as well as in Atlanta, Rudd has a pretty good grasp of what he can fit into a day's workshop. He said his one-day classes will stress "how to not be afraid of painting and to enjoy painting watercolor" and also "the values of lights and darks." "I go off the old masters' primary palette, which is a simple palette and doesn't get confusing," he said. "So we can work off lights and darks. If I just push that, students are always surprised at how much they can do with it." High school students can take any of the classes, including nighttime classes, and all students are eligible for tuition deductions.
