Whaler girls prepare for weekend home games

"We started out sluggish," Whaler girls' head coach Chris Ferreira said later. "We hadn't played in a while."

Indeed, it had been nearly three weeks since the lady Whalers had seen competition, but the well-rested squad traveled to Norfolk County Agricultural High School Saturday afternoon and bettered their record to 4-1 with a 60-28 dismantling of their hosts. Nantucket built up a 28- 13 halftime lead and took off from there. Shantel Hanniford put in another fine performance with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 6 steals.

"It's good to get back to playing again," Ferreira noted. His team will get its chance to play starting tomorrow, as the girls are scheduled to host three games in four days, including a weekend doubleheader. Cape Cod Academy is on for tomorrow, while Norfolk Aggie visits the island Saturday afternoon (for a 5:30 p.m. start) and West Bridgewater drops in for a rare Sunday matchup. That game is slated to start at noon.

With West Bridgewater handing the lady Whalers their lone loss to date, the team is looking forward to the rematch. "The real test for us is
