Conversations with Art
      Kasia Baker did not start painting until she was 39. She had lived on Nantucket, moved away, had a child, come back. During that time, however, the paintings were waiting for her. "I finally cleared enough space in my life to do something like that," she explained when asked how she found her voice in a paintbrush.

STROLLING ALONG TO A HANDMADE HOLIDAY
      Christmas is in full swing. This weekend is Christmas Stroll, when Santa is ushered in compliments of the Coast Guard, none of whom I am sure are named Dasher, Dancer, Prancer or Vixen. Most people think of the reindeers as male, but guess what? They were equally divided. Dasher, Prancer, Comet and Donner were male, and Dancer, Vixen, Cupid and Blitzen were female.

      While analysts busily dissect the purchases of 132 million shoppers this past weekend to forecast the economy for the next several months, I have compared my own modest figures and am satisfied this will be a good season and a strong year ahead. People may be reticent to buy a house, but they are eager to shop for their pets.

Walking on cobblestones lowers blood pressure, improves balance
      The path to better health and lower blood pressure may be paved with cobblestones. When people over 60 walked on smooth, rounded cobblestones for just a half-hour a day over four months, they significantly lowered their blood pressure and improved their balance, a study showed.

NHS STUDENT SARAH POOR PRODUCES TRIBUTE CONCERT
      NCMC/Nantucket School of Music student Sarah Poor is producing a concert that will feature her peers and music teachers to honor the life of fellow NHS student Kate MacLellan who passed away in October. The concert will be held this Sunday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. at The Hayloft at Bartlett's Farm.

HALBERSTAM FILM AT ATHENEUM
      The Nantucket Atheneum will screen a 28 minute film about David Halberstam's bestselling "The Coldest Winter: America and the Korean War" on Monday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Great Hall. The film is produced by Powell's Books of Portland, Oregon and is the second book to be featured in its "Out of the Book" film series. From Nov. 11 to Dec.

EVENING OF REMEMBRANCE
      The Nantucket Historical Association will present a Veterans Gam: An Evening of Music and Remembrance on Pearl Harbor Day, Friday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Whaling Museum. On the anniversary of the United States' involvement in WWII, the Gam will honor veterans from all wars, including the Korean and Vietnam wars.
