      AT ITS MEETING WEDNESDAY, AUG. 15, THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN WILL: • Hear a request for fee waivers from Nantucket Homes for People, tabled from last week's meeting. • Hear a request from the Planning Commission for support of an application to the Community Preservation Committee to fund the position of a housing planner/specialist position.

      SSA BOARD ACCEPTS UNION CONTRACT The Steamship Authority board voted unanimously to approve a new union contract for its unlicensed deck hand employees in a special executive session last Friday. The two-year contract comes after four years of negotiations and delineates working conditions for approximately 220 people, the ferry line's largest bargaining unit.

      SAND TIGER SHARK ALERT In addition to hooking seals, bluefish or striped bass at Great Point this summer, it's quite possible that you may sink your pearl bomber or ballistic missile into a sand tiger shark that hunts for food within casting distance of surf fishermen along the shores of the Cape and Islands.

SUMMER NOTES
      The third week in August, in the vernacular, might be called peak week. The season has peaked. We are passing over the hump of summer. In a few days, the siren call of school and college and real life will begin to draw people away. For those of us who live and work here the pace of life will begin to ease a bit and, hopefully, so will the traffic.

YACK on: Paving Paradise
      The Planning Board voted on Monday evening, five to nil, to do the unthinkable - to pave Eel Point Road from the end of the current pavement all the way to 40th pole. I blame myself. I had to be off island for business and could not be at the meeting.

BEACH BABY BINGO
      This week plan on dressing your children in their swimsuits and leaving them on because the beach is the place for activities! As long as you run your little sea urchins through the outdoor shower at least once a day, it should be okay.
