      No longer is the Maria Mitchell Association just a repository and display for preserved specimens of island wildlife. In Maria Mitchell's Natural History Museum at the Hinchman House at 7 Milk St. are living examples of Nantucket's diverse populations.

      This year, more than most it seems, there is a focus on plans - not on planning as such, but on developing the blueprint for future planning. The works in progress include the 41-81D Master Plan and the Downtown Traffic Study. The recently completed include the Harbors Plan and the Tom Nevers Area Plan.

YACK on: Pavement
      Ioriginally began writing this week's column on Pavement. I'm talking, of course, about the 90s indie rock band that had a hit with the song "Cut Your Hair" in 1994. Pavement was the first band to achieve fame and critical praise without the help of a major record label. And this was in the day (oh, so long ago, now, wasn't it?

Pet Tracks
WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE
      When you live on an island, by definition, you are surrounded by water. For most of the year, but particularly in summer, water activities are our passion. We love being beside it, on it, or, for the stalwart, in it. Since our pets do what we do, we also want to include them in our water-oriented pastimes.
