Island fundraisers hope to ease hardships
      Nantucket takes care of its own, and islanders are coming together once more to help two residents during difficult times. Fundraisers will be held at The Jetties next Wednesday evening, June 20, and at Bennett Hall and the Rose and Crown next Sunday, June 24, in support of John Billings and Rachel Parrotto Budzynski, each of whom is battling cancer.

      If a male and female catbird so much as fly around together and act like they are a couple, Nantucket's birding cognoscenti will log their existence and behavior. The same goes for any other bird species on Nantucket that courts, nests and produces eggs over the next three years.

Selectmen appoint new committee members
      At its June 6 meeting, the Board of Selectmen named appointees to vacancies on various town boards, commissions and committees after having held a meeting with applicants in May to ask individual questions about their interests and qualifications. In making the selections, the board considered diversity and a mix of skills as well as exhibition of a cooperative spirit.

Air Force Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Astronautical Engineering on May 30, 2007. Lieutenant Allen is the grandson of Nantucket native John Allen and his wife Peggy.
