Lacrosse advances with victory

a celebration of athleticism
      In a celebration of athleticism in which competitors of all ages take part, the 27th annual Iron Teams Relay once again attracted scores of island participants Sunday. The annual event that helps raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nantucket, puts less emphasis on competition and more on the spirit of teamwork, as entrants run, paddle, swim and bike to the finish line.

      If you had to be anywhere on island Sunday afternoon, the place to be was the softball diamond, where the Lady Whalers advanced in state tournament play in an extra inning comeback gem that is worthy of all-time Nantucket High School status.

Baseball squad ends season at home
      It looked extremely promising for the Whalers through five innings Friday afternoon, but a victory just wasn't in the cards as Bristol-Plymouth scored five times in the top of the sixth, creating a deficit Nantucket couldn't overcome, and ending the high school baseball season in the first round of state tournament play.

BIRDS OF NANTUCKET
      Strangely enough, there seem to be too few birds named after John James Audubon. He is perceived as the father of North American ornithology but perhaps that was because he was better at managing his publicity. He was also good enough to name many birds for his friends and colleagues, and they forgot to reciprocate.
