Mollie Glazer named NCMC director
People say that things have a way of working out on Nantucket for people who are meant to be here. Sometimes, it takes a while for the destiny of it all to be fully realized, as has been the case with Mollie Glazer, who has recently been named the new executive director of the NCMC/Nantucket School of Music, effective July 1. She succeeds Dr. Gerald Mack, who announced his retirement last spring.

"Miniature Books: 4,000 Years of Tiny Treasures" by Anne C. Broomer and Julian I. Edison Abrams
When you hold a miniature book in your hand, it is like a small, precious jewel. "Miniature Books: 4,000 Years of Tiny Treasures" is the first lavishly illustrated, authoritative volume on the delightful subject of books no taller than three inches. "Miniature Books" is filled with great stories and fascinating people - a prayer book that Anne Boleyn carried, a tiny tome that Napoleon took on his campaigns. Its dazzling array is shown--with few exceptions--at actual size: Miro's "Pointe de Mire" is only one inch by one inch and Picasso's "Temperature" is a mere seven-eighths of an inch by one inch. "Miniature Books" speaks not only to the experienced collector, but also to just anyone who loves a novel volume! - Christie Cure, Mitchell's Book Corner Nantucket Bookworks 25 Broad Street, 228-4000

"A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini
This could easily be my pick for 'book of the year.' "A Thousand Splendid Suns" is the story of two women: one, the illegitimate daughter of a rich businessman; the other, the educated beautiful young daughter of a professor and his "liberated" wife. Their lives intertwine, come loose and rejoin again in a landscape populated by husbands, children, friends, war, beauty and brutality.

"Thank You Bear" by Greg Foley
This debut by author/illustrator Greg Foley delivers a simple message with easy text and plain but sweet illustrations. Bear has found a box, what he thinks is the "greatest thing ever" for his friend mouse. But showing the box to fox, owl, squirrel and others only dampens his enthusiasm and makes him doubt the value of his gift. It is only when mouse comes by that bear's uncertainty is swept away, replaced by a story ending rich in friendship and gratitude. This book is accessible to toddlers, but its meaning is ageless. - Maggie Head, Children's and Young Adult Librarian, Nantucket Atheneum

Brittany Murphy is excellent in a supporting role that shows us a life that has been left behind. Also starring Toni Collette, Giovanni Ribisi, Marcia Gay Harden and Kerry Washington.
