Stop & Shop parking lot expansion moves forward
      The Planning Board has given the thumbs up to Stop & Shop Supermarket Corporation's application to remove the old bank building from the southeast corner of its midisland property and increase the parking capacity of its lot by 17 spaces. By coincidence, this project will bring the total number of spaces to 139, the number currently required by the town's zoning by-law.

ON THE COURT Nantucket Court Report
      District Court convened for a short session on Monday before preliminary proceedings in the murder trial for Thomas Toolan began in Superior Court. During the District Court session, the case against Richard L. Burrell, 30, of Nantucket, was dismissed after he paid due court costs. He was charged Aug. 16, 2005 with drug possession and had the case continued without finding.

      Junior, our 11-1/2 year old Chessie, recently had a complete physical work up at our Nantucket MSPCAAngell, including a physical examination, complete blood work, urinalysis and an ultrasound performed by a visiting cardiologist consultant from Boston's MSPCA-Angell. Yes, he's fine, thank you very much; in fact, he's in great shape for his breed and age.

Obama to appear on island in July
      Democratic candidate for president and junior senator from Illinois, Barack Obama is tentatively scheduled to make a Nantucket campaign stop on Friday, July 20. Obama is expected to keynote two events - a larger, daytime event and then a private evening event at an island home.

Nantucket High School graduates 97 Saturday
      Graduation exercises for 97 Nantucket High School seniors will be held this Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Mary P. Walker Auditorium. For many, the ceremonies will be the culmination of thirteen years of learning in the island's public school system. After what has seemed to some an eternity, the final exams have now been taken and the world beckons.

Schools keep an eye out with new security cameras
      New security cameras are in place at the high school and Cyrus Peirce School, giving administrators a useful tool in keeping watch over the busy buildings. "They've been up and running for two weeks," the schools' director of facilities Jack McFarland said Friday.
