Cohasset test this Sunday
Lacrosse team looks ahead to benchmark matchup, and to second half of season
      Approaching the midway point of the season, the Whalers boys' lacrosse team knows that next Sunday's home matchup with defending Division 3 champs Cohasset will be a fitting benchmark for possible postseason play. "Right now we need to beat the teams we should beat if we intend to make the playoffs," coach Rick Blair said after Saturday's 11-4 loss at home to perennial powerhouse Marshfield.

Molloy hired as assistant to AD Larrabee
      Former Nantucket High School athletic director Jack Molloy began work Monday as a part-time assistant to current athletic director Nancy Larrabee. Molloy stepped down from the AD post last June after four years on the job, citing the need for administrative help.

Marshfield prevails over girls' varsity squad
      Ashley Martin scored three goals and Briana Vittorini added two more, but it wasn't enough for the Lady Whalers Saturday afternoon, as Marshfield rode a balanced attack to an 11-5 victory. Vittorini opened the game's scoring, but Marshfield answered with four goals before Martin netted her first at the 10:19 mark of the first half.

Weekend success for youth soccer
      Six NSSA teams saw action this past weekend. The U8 #2 boys traveled to Yarmouth-Dennis under the guidance of substitute coach Matt Parker. With one substitute, the team seemed at a disadvantage. However, within the first 15 seconds of hitting the pitch Ethan Fey scored and the team never looked back. Parker reported that Nantucket's defense "really shut them down all through the day.

      SOFTBALL TEAM STARTS SEASON 4-0 Although they didn't play over the weekend, the Lady Whalers' softball team remained undefeated through last week with defeats of Cape Tech and Falmouth. Nantucket trounced Cape Tech, 18-1, and turned back Falmouth, 5-2.

      FLYING KILLER WHALES Orcas - they remind me of Orcas. They are so black and shiny above and so snowy white below. These are Tree Swallows and they are just now settling in to raise their families here on Nantucket. I first wrote about these feathered darts back in late 2004 and called the article "The Swallows of Autumn.

CPS baseball starts season with victory
      The Cyrus Peirce baseball team won its season-opening game, 17- 0, over the Provincetown Middle School team last Wednesday. Starter Nick Lombardi threw a one-hitter, allowing just a single in the first inning. He struck out 14 batters, including six straight batters in the second and third innings, to earn the complete game win in the six inning contest.

Whalers' bats silenced by Mashpee hurler
      It's the classic baseball parlor game - you make the call. Here's the situation: in the bottom of the fifth inning against Mashpee Saturday afternoon, Ethan Bell was hit by a pitch to reach first base. A stolen base and passed ball later, he stands on third, looking to be brought home by Tomas Smaliorius, who bunts.
