For the past month, the birdies were flying around the Nantucket High School gym - a testament to the popularity of the racket sport that island students have adopted as their own. The game is badminton, and the students of NHS are among its staunchest advocates. Awareness of the indoor sport is such that students have formed a badminton club, with the full backing of the student council. More ... So, I'm still down here in Palm Beach, trying to keep from getting overheated and dodging insults from up north. Case in point, Sharon at The Nantucket Independent office referred to me as a "poor baby" when she heard where I was. But I think she was being kind of sarcastic when she said it. Call 228-2516 for more information. On March 10, eight skaters from the Nantucket Skating Club competed at the Warwick, R.I. basic skills competition. More ... This is a bird we aren't going to see on Nantucket this winter. Maybe next year- maybe not! But when we do see them, chances are we'll see a great many. 2003 was an amazing year for these birds. We found 469 of them on our Christmas Bird Count. I thought this would put them in the top ten, numbers-wise on that count, but no, it was number 25. There are a lot of birds around at Christmas time. More ... They finished with the school's best record ever in basketball (20-4), appeared in four state tournament games, and came one game away from competing for the state final. When they played Sacred Heart, they were one of only four teams remaining from the initial field of nineteen. More ... |
