CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT DEC. 30 The Nantucket Bird Club calls upon volunteers on Nantucket Island to join birders across the western hemisphere and participate in Audubon's longest-running wintertime tradition, the annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC), to be held Saturday, December 30. There will be a pre-count meeting at the University of Massachusetts Field Station the preceding evening (Friday) at 7 p.m.

Counts are open to birders of all skill levels. The Nantucket Bird Club is in need of people who are familiar with the island and are able to drive.

This year, over 2,000 individual counts are scheduled to take place throughout the Americas from December 14, 2006 to January 5, 2007.

HARLEM ROCKETS RETURN JAN. 5 The barnstorming basketball team the Harlem Rockets will return to Nantucket High School’s John O’Neill gymnasium Friday night, Jan. 5, at 7 p.m. Tickets are available either at the high school office or from members of the girls’ basketball team. The Rockets’ performance will benefit the girls’ program.

Runners meet Saturdays rain or shine at 8:45 a.m. at the corner of Beach and Easton streets for a 9 a.m. start. The 5K (3.1 miles) run is on paved roads over a mostly flat course, accurately wheel measured, with one hill and some moderate grades. Runners of all ability from beginners to veterans are welcome.
