ELECTION RECOUNT THIS SATURDAY The recount of the ballots from the Nov. 21 special election happens this Saturday in the high school cafeteria starting at 8 a.m. The public may attend to observe the process and learn the outcome first hand, but may not challenge the recount tally.

The recount was requested by Patty Roggeveen after she lost the race for an interim selectman’s seat to Catherine Stover by two votes, with totals after a hand count of ballots rejected by the automatic machine standing at 803 for Stover to 801 for Roggeveen. David Gray, the third contender, earned 373 votes. The late Arch McColl, who died unexpectedly on Oct. 22 but whose name still appeared on the ballot, received 15 posthumous votes.

On Saturday, 20 teams of two people each will hand count all 2004 ballots cast in the special election to fill the brief remaining months of former selectman Michael Glowacki’s term. He resigned from the board in August for health reasons. If there are any questionable ballots, special runners will bring them to voter registrars who will determine how they should be interpreted.

HARVEYS PUT ON THIRD CHRISTMAS SPREAD FOR ELDERS Through the generosity of Sea Grille owners E.J. and Robin Harvey and with the aid of a team of volunteers coordinated by Elder Services of The Cape and Islands, Nantucket senior citizens who will be alone on Christmas or cannot afford or cannot make a special holiday meal will have a complimentary turkey dinner with all the fixings delivered to their homes that day.

For the third consecutive year, the Harveys and their kitchen helpers are setting aside hours from their personal celebrations to cook several fresh turkeys, make stuffing, potatos and gravy, a vegetable and dessert at their restaurant.

The filling hot meal is then boxed and delivered starting at Christmas noon by a large group of volunteer drivers who are each given three or four elder addresses. If you know someone who would benefit from this gift of nourishment, call Elder Services at 228-4647 as early before Christmas as possible so no deserving seniors are overlooked.

CLARIFICATION: SUPPORTS CONCEPT In response to a Dec. 6 article in The Independent about Ande Grennan’s proposal to slightly expand the Madaket market and add liquor, beer and wine to its products, Planning Director Andrew Vorce clarified that the planning department supports the concept of small convenience markets in the island’s outlying areas, but did not mean to imply in his quote that the department necessarily endorses liquor licenses for these retailers. Vorce stressed that he has not yet held a formal review of Grennan’s application to expand the market and add seasonal liquor sales.
