Roggeveen expected to turn in recount request today
Patty Roggeveen, who lost the Nov. 21 special election to Catherine Stover by just two votes, is expected to submit her formal request for a recount to the Town Clerk's office today. Roggeveen earned 801 to Stover's 803 votes in a brief race for a vacant selectman's seat lasting until April.

Candidates seeking a recount have 10 days from the election to gather 10 registered voter's signatures and have the request notorized before it is turned in to have the recount scheduled. Three registrars must be present

at the tally to serve as judges if there is a question about the intent of a ballot, such as if someone crossed out a choice and filled in a second ballot bubble. Forty clerks in 20 teams of two read and count the ballots and 10 runners are needed to carry the ballots to registrars if a decision is required.

Recent recounts have been held at the high school cafeteria on Saturdays. The recount cannot be scheduled until a date is determined when all the necessary

participants are available.
