"House of Worship: Sacred Spaces in America" by Dominique Browning,

with an introduction

by Peter J. Gomes

For the special people on your holiday list, this big, beautiful book ($45) illustrates different houses of worship across the United States - reflecting the astonishingly diverse cultural and ethnic makeup of our country. Noticing everything from a tiny, shingled chapel in Maine, to a massive, glass Cathedral in California, this sumptuous, full-color volume is especially for architecture buffs.

"Touchy Subjects"

by Emma Donoghue

In the 19 stories of "Touchy Subjects," Donoghue extends her range beyond her earlier feminist works. Her characters are young and old, straight and gay. All of the stories are brilliant and different in relating slight incidents that lead to revisions or disruptions of people's lives.

"Cars" (Rated G for garages)

Instead of being inhabited by people, the world is populated by cars in this Disney/Pixar film. The racecar Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) crashes into the small town of Radiator Falls. Because of the damage he causes, this cocky racecar has to do community service before he can head off to his big race. Lightning learns respect for the people of the small town and finds love with a car named Sally (Bonnie Hunt) before heading off to compete against cars Chick Hicks (Michael Keaton) and "The King" (Richard Petty.)

WE LIKE IT

WE LOVE IT

We make the pick

Do you want to be famous, but only for a couple of months, or maybe even a couple of minutes? Need a new vacation idea for the off-season? Reality TV might be perfect for you. Now that there's a proliferation of reality options on TV, the casting calls are steady, and www.sirlinksalot. net/castingcalls.html keeps a current log of all available reality TV opportunities (plus application forms) as well as calls for game show contestants. The next season of "Big Brother" is currently casting, for example. The application for NBC's game show "1 vs. 100" asks you to write a small poem or rap, and Fox's "Trading Spouses" is allegedly under an "urgent deadline." And lest we not forget the grandfather of them all, "The Real World 19" is currently accepting audition tapes from people ages 18- 24 whose world isn't real enough where they are. - MG
