Whalers rout Old Colony, 44-0 The Whalers, who won their second straight game, improved to 4-4, 2-1 in the Mayflower Small. Farmer, the starting tailback, now has seven touchdowns and three conversions to top the Whalers in scoring with 54 points. Farmer carried the ball 12 times for 183 yards, an astonishing average of 15.2 yards per carry. O'Mara rushed the ball eight times for 48 yards. Nantucket had 14 first downs and posted 335 yards in rushing offense, while holding the Cougars, who had scored 50 points the previous week, to 128 yards, including just 22 yards passing. Junior linebacker Eric Hughes recovered a fumble on Old Colony's first possession on the Old Colony 31 yard line. The Whalers made it 8-0 with 8:29 left as Farmer scored from 21 yards out on the second play from scrimmage. It was a two play 31 yard drive that consumed just 36 seconds. Senior quarterback Geddes Paulsen threw a conversion pass to sophomore wide receiver Delroy Lawrence for the two point conversion. Old Colony then drove deep into Nantucket territory before O'Mara recovered a fumble on the Whaler's 12 yard line. On their next drive, the Whalers made it 16-0 with a three yard run by O'Mara. He capped a 10 play 88 yard drive that took 5:15. Farmer had 56 yards on the drive and O'Mara registered 25 yards. Paulsen found junior wide receiver Evan Hourihan for the conversion pass that made it 16-0. Two Old Colony fumbles led to 16 first half points for Nantucket. The Whalers received the ball to start the second half. On its third play, Farmer had his second scoring run, a 38 yard rush. Paulsen's conversion rush made it 24-0. O'Mara then had an interception for the Whalers. On its second play of the drive, Farmer broke free for a 39 yard scoring run, his third touchdown of the game. O'Mara's kick closed out the scoring in the third quarter, 31-0. Paulsen got the ball back for the Whalers with his first interception of the year. Six plays and 36 yards later, O'Mara had his second touchdown of the day, a four yard run,for a 37-0 Whalers lead. Nantucket provided the 44-0 final as senior back Mark Dwyer scored his sixth touchdown of the season on a 78-yard run. Farmer had the extra point kick. It was a one play drive after Old Colony lost its fourth fumble of the day and combined with the two interceptions, the Cougars totaled six turnovers. Nantucket will play its final road game of the season at Mayflower Small opponent Tri-County on Saturday at 1 p.m. I |
