Junior varsity, freshman teams doing well
BY STEVE SHEPPARD
It's been a good year for the Whalers junior varsity football team, as evidenced by its 4-0-1 record. The freshman squad is also doing well, with a 1-0 record so far.

Coach Dennis Caron, now in his thirty-second year as JV coach, is preparing for the next game that will be held at home next Monday, October 30, at 3 p.m. "We're a little banged up, so it's good to have a break in the schedule," he said.

The young Whalers feature a solid group of players. Sophomore quarterback Chris Welch has proved to be a team leader who's done "a great job," Caron said. Another sophomore, tailback Hakeem Lecky, will give the varsity a big boost next year. "We were down 16-14 against North Shore Tech, and we recovered a fumble on our own 12 yard line. Three plays later, Hakeem ran 65 yards for a touchdown." Other noteworthy contributors to the squad

include: sophomore center Gary Pillion; freshman right tackle Chris Santangelo; guards Curran Huyser and James Rhodes; tight end John Higgins ("good hands," says Caron); flanker Troy Sullivan; Hunter Day, "who was just moved to tailback. He scored two touchdowns against South Shore Tech."

All in all, "a pretty talented group."

Caron also credits his coaching staff of Greg Moore, Elvis Butler, Phil Albertson and his son, Robert, who's helping out while awaiting assignment with the Marine Corps' officer candidate school.
