Walkers head out on the five-mile route around Delta Field for the American Cancer Society's annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk Sunday.
WALKERS RAISE $53,000 AT "MAKING STRIDES" WALK More than 250 people gathered on Sunday to raise awareness and dollars to fight breast cancer at the annual American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Nantucket. Breast cancer survivors, friends and family followed the five-mile route around Delta Field to honor breast cancer survivors and fondly remember those who have lost their lives to the disease.

Making Strides is the nation's oldest and largest one-day breast cancer fundraiser, and is the American Cancer Society's signature event during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

This year's walk brought in more than $53,000, making it the most successful Nantucket event to date.

This year, Nantucket is one of 17 Making Strides walks being held this month throughout New England, and just one of 100 Strides events that will be held throughout the nation. According to American Cancer Society statistics, every three minutes a woman in the United States learns she has breast cancer.

Dollars raised through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer directly support the American Cancer Society's breast cancer research, education, advocacy and patient support programs.
