PUBLIC HEARINGS ON HOLD Much of the Planning Board's Oct. 12 meeting was postponed because one of its five full-time members had a family medical emergency. Those following the board's review of Bluefin, LLC, the 19-lot cluster subdivision proposed for 120 Miacomet Road will have to wait until its public hearing resumes again on Dec. 11. Likewise, anyone keeping tabs on Billy Cassidy's proposed 15-lot residential development, Finback Lane, off Bartlett Road, should return to the Oct. 30 Planning Board meeting when this hearing is set to continue. The board also pushed the Cliffside Beach Club's public hearing for its plan to add a 20-seat bistro for its members only, to Dec. 11, and the Manor House's 10-room addition idea with a plan for underground parking to the last meeting of the year on Dec. 31.

AT INTERMISSION FOR THE DREAMLAND If you've had the patience at past Planning Board meetings to sit through them all the way to the end, you may have hoped to hear what Dreamland Theater owner Haim Zahavi would be telling the board about getting the film aspect of the building operational by the middle of June 2007.

At its Oct. 25 meeting, the board unanimously decided to give Zahavi until Oct. 24 to produce a timeline showing how he would repair and open the theater in time for the 2007 season.

Zahavi's special permit - which he received on Jan. 19 - to renovate the Dreamland requires that he operate the theater during the renovations. He failed to do that this year.

The Oct. 24 deadline came with a provision that the board would re-open the Dreamland's public hearing if the timeline were not produced. The board, however, agreed to an extension to Nov. 13. ARROWS, BUCKSHOT AND MUSKET BALLS Deer hunting season on Nantucket began yesterday for those who shoot deer with bows and arrows. Archery season runs Oct. 16 through Nov. 25. Shotgun season follows Nov. 27 through Dec. 9 and the deer-hunting season wraps up with two weeks of muzzleloader hunting from Dec. 11 to Dec. 30.

If you're planning any outdoor activities including walking and running, be aware that hunters can hunt from a half hour before sunrise through a half hour after sunset. Anyone venturing out into the island wild should be wary of hunters and wear at least one article of bright neon orange clothing. If you bring your dog, cloth it in a similarly colored sweater or vest, or at the very least, a fluorescent orange or yellow dog collar.

Archery hunters, who tried to buy antlerless deer permits online from the Mass Outdoors Web site on Oct. 10, listen up! That system suffered network problems on Oct. 10 preventing online permit buyers from getting their permits. The system has since been restored and those with hunting licenses purchased prior to Oct. 10 can now get their archery permits for antlerless deer at www.sport.state.ma.us/.

HAZARDOUS WASTE DAY Saturday is hazardous waste day at the Nantucket Landfill. Hoarders of half empty paint cans, packrats with buckets of spent batteries, drums of used motor oil and garages full of long abandoned domestic, yet toxic chemicals should muster in front of its garage at 188 Madaket Road. From 8 a.m. to 12 noon, take the third entrance to the landfill property coming from the town and the first coming from Madaket. For a complete listing of what you can and can't unload, check out www.nantucketma. gov/departments/dpw.html, scroll down and click on the link for household hazardous waste or call 228-7244.
