NEW TO THE N.F.D. FLEET
Phill Walker, a technician from the S&S Fire Apparatus Co. in Fairmount, Ind., demonstrates the features of the Nantucket Fire Department's new engine/pumper at the fire station on Saturday morning. Walker explained that many of the workings of the truck are electronic, with computerized circuits and touch-pad panels that replace the mechanical controls on older fire-fighting trucks. The new 4WD truck carries a 750-gallon water reserve, and can deliver (at the touch of a few buttons) a pre-mix of fire-retardant foam. Powered by a Mercedes-Benz engine, the truck is capable of pumping 1,000 gallons per minute. Dubbed "Engine Two," the truck will be housed at the 'Sconset Fire Station.
