AUCTION RAISES $45,000 FOR EDUCATIONAL AIR PROGRAM The "Nantucket Auction 2006," that supported the Nantucket Educational Air Program, Inc. (NEAP), was the island's first-ever online auction with more than 650 bids on the 84 items donated by generous individuals and businesses, both on and off Nantucket Island. The final amount raised, $45,000, will be used to promote aviation history and education, while assisting in paying for the costs associated with the very successful Nantucket Air Show - held during the last weekend of September.

With online bidding going on during the entire month of August, the auction attracted registered users and interested viewers from throughout the United States while, at the same time, promoting the Air Show.

"Online auctions are the wave of the future," said E. Foley Vaughan, the President of NEAP, the nonprofit foundation that focuses on aviation. "Already, several other island groups have contacted us to explore doing a similar type of fundraiser."

NEAP would like to thank the auction sponsors, Earth Tech Architecture and Nantucket Memorial Airport. The foundation looks forward to planning various aviation education initiatives with the funds it has already raised and will raise in the future. NHAANNOUNCES 2006 VERNEY FELLOW The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) is pleased to announce that Renée Bergland, Ph.D., has been awarded the E. Geoffrey and Elizabeth Thayer Verney Fellowship for 2006.

Established in 1999, the program supports research in the collections of the Nantucket Historical Association and other Nantucket repositories and is open to academics, graduate students, and independent scholars. Topics of research for recent fellows have included health aboard whaleships, women at sea, scrimshaw, samplers, local artists and prominent citizens, Nantucket's architectural heritage, Quakerism, and the African-American and Cape Verdean communities on Nantucket.

A published author, Berland is an associate professor of American Literature at Simmons College in Boston and is finishing a book about Maria Mitchell and the shift in American perspectives on women scientists in the nineteenth century. She will be spending three weeks on island doing her final research.

"I've grown more curious about the Nantucket context for Mitchell's extraordinary life," said Berland. "I want to learn more about the mathematically or scientifically inclined women of Nantucket who may have been role models for Mitchell."

The E. Geoffrey and Elizabeth Thayer Verney Fellowship provides a modest stipend and housing in one of the NHA's historic properties, and the fellow is expected to produce an article suitable for publication in Historic Nantucket, the NHA's quarterly publication.

Bergland will arrive on Nantucket in mid-October.
