"Forgetfulness"

by Ward Just ($25)

With a background in foreign service, Just favors American characters living abroad and often enmeshed in a web of diplomatic connections. The main character in "Forgetfulness" is 60-something artist Thomas Railles who, at the book's onset, is living a semi-retired life with a French wife at the foot of the Pyrenees Mountains. When Railles' wife breaks her ankle crossing the mountain range and dies at the hands of terrorists who tried but could not assist the ailing woman all the way home, Railles seeks the help of his friends in the CIA to find the terrorists and facilitate an encounter. A book about dealing with loss and displacement, "Forgetfulness" mixes politics with national identity and love.

"Take the Lead" and

Mad Hot Ballroom"

If you love TV's "Dancing with the Stars" - which just began its new season - we have two DVDs that should be required viewing for you. "Take the Lead" stars Antonio Banderas and Alfre Woodard. Based on the true story of dancer and instructor Pierre Dulane, the movie follows Dulane's character after he witnesses a crime committed by a high school student. Dulane finds out where the kid goes to school and approaches the principal about teaching students to dance to help them discover self-respect and confidence. In the process, they create a new form of ballroom dancing with his classical training and their knowledge of hiphop. "Mad Hot Ballroom" is a documentary that shows the widespread effects of Dulane's success. As the result of his work with one high school, ballroom dancing spread to over 60 schools and 7,000 inner-city middle school students. The documentary looks at their training and competition.
