Puppet Q&A
BY MARLI GUZZETTA
Nantucket puppeteer Joe Zito has over a dozen lively, fur-filled characters living in his home, including Larry and Lenny the Lobsters, Baxter Forward the Dog, Sid the Skunk, The Egg Man, Gruff (played by James Cennamo), Zeet from Zoltan (Bobby Lamb), Scratch Mo' Cat, Syd Ferocious (Eric Schultz), Phineas T. Grunge and Hare E. Hoodini. They perform with Zito every Saturday morning at Children's Beach through August 15 and will also assist with Zito's puppet building workshop at the Artists' Association of Nantucket later this summer.

When they aren't working, they watch TV, play in the yard, rifle through the garbage looking for a snack and talk on the phone. Last week, Hare E. Hoodini and then Phineas T. Grunge (or just "Grunge") took a few minutes to yack on the horn with The Independent.
Nantucket Independent: Tell the readers a little about yourself, Hare.
Hare E. Hoodini: I'm a magic rabbit, you know. I have to use a special phone, because my ears are really far up. And I'm only 5 1/2. I'm originally from Brooklyn. I come from a long line of show business rabbits. My great, great, great, great grandfather was part of Harry Hoodini show. So it was kind of natural for me to get into the business. How many "greats" was that? Let's go with four.

Are you single?
I'm only 5 1/2 years old.
Well, you know, do you have a special friend rabbit?
No, I don't have a 'special rabbit.' I don't have the time at the moment, no matter what you hear. I'm only 5 1/2.
Well, you still work and you're only 5 1/2. Doesn't that go against Labor Laws? Don't you have to go to school?
I get tutors. And I can only work one show a day.
You're a very professional hare for a 5 1/2 year old.
Well I'm working off a script. And I've been in the business a looooong time. At least since I was 2 1/2.
Do you get to meet the kids after the show?
Oh, I really like at the end of the show when the kids come up and they talk to us. Kids say anything and everything. Everything from 'Oh, look at my shirt! It's new!'to some very personal items.
If you could have one wish granted, what would it be?
I would wish that everybody could be happy.
How would that change Nantucket?
Well, nobody would get mad in traffic, no one would talk on cell phones in public places - all of the characters like that one - and there would be more bicycles and fewer cars. And everyone should be in golf carts! That would be fun!
Nantucket Independent: Hello, Grunge. So, I heard you were on MTV. When was that?
Phineas T. Grunge: Back in the day... I think it was 1987. I was young. I didn't have a trademark vest.
How do you like Nantucket?
I loooove Nantucket. The garbage is so sweet here. I love to play in garbage, sometimes I eat what people leave in the bottom of the can, some mildew. Or chudge - if I can find that I'm very happy.
What's 'chudge?'
Cheese and fudge mixed together. It's us monsters' favorite treat.
Are you the lead monster?
No, no, no. Everyone plays their part. Everyone does something well.
That's a very egalitarian group of monsters. What do you do well?
Poetry. I recite poetry. Shel Silverstein is my favorite.
Do you get to talk to the kids?
It's different when they see me because I'm so large...When they come up, they're very, very, very ... um ... impressed.
Your size makes a difference?
I believe it does. When someone is twice your size, it does. And when your parent is shoving you in their face it does. I've seen all faces.
What do you do when the kids cry?
I say I'm going away and then turn away.
Do you really go away?
I have to. I don't want to scare them anymore. I've learned in my long career that the one who makes the child cry does not work when trying to console the child.
What were you like as a child? I was into everything.
Literally.
Yes literally. When you don't have to stay clean, it's amazing what you can get into.
What's your favorite dumpster?
Fahey & Fromagerie. We look for the cheese there. Or we look for cheese at the better homes and garbage. And at the dump, the take it or leave it. And at the 'Sconset dump, we still hang out there and find stuff.
If you could have a wish granted, what would it be?
Can I say world peace? Is this a beauty pageant? Still, I say world peace. And more recycling.
That would take away your garbage. No it wouldn't - trust me.
